Christians take the record in marital tinkering right from the middle ages. They did not invent marriage of course but they clobbered it to the point of extinction. And all to ensure the married woman is not treated as the underdog.
The first salvo was to insist that if men married only one woman or 9ne wife it could lead to marital bliss. They got it wrong. Men went ahead to acquire mistresses. Or as we say now side chicks. Secondly they made divorce pretty expensive for men. Again that was wrong. Men got wiser by shunning marriages altogether. Instead of allowing polygamy which suits the saying that half bread is better than none they went ahead and made legal what is called open relationship. Wrong again. But they may have gotten it right this time as willing couples can now live together without marrying. Western men and women have now embraced this arrangement with a frenzy.
Could this be the end of marriages as we know them? And could this be the trend across non western countries?? Only time will tell. However countries that allow polygamy have a ready made solution to the declining population of marriageable men. Suitable men are on the decline across the world and women can attest to this. Unmarried women and young girls in the millions are not getting husbands in the west.
